Poi Class schedule for August is as follows:

Tuesday the 5th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm, San Lorenzo park
Monday the 11th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm, Seabright Beach (by the cave on the north/west end)
Tuesday the 12th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm, San Lorenzo park
Monday the 18th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm, Seabright Beach
Tuesday the 19th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm, San Lorenzo park

The price per class will be $10 (requested donation). I am also willing to arrange trades.

Classes will be open to all levels (beginning through advanced, If are more advanced then me then you get to teach). There was some interest in separating levels into different classes but I haven't thought of an easy way to do that for this round. If any of you have suggestions on that I would appreciate it. Content will be determined by student interest and after each class I will write up a review and email it to anyone who wants it.

Extra sets of poi will be limited so please bring your own. I encourage you to make your own poi if you do not already have a pair.
My favorite way to make poi at this point is to take a water balloon, fill it with enough sand (or anything soft like rice or beans) so that it is a comfortable weight, and put it in some sort of long sock. The sock material should preferably be strong, soft, slightly stretchy, and have a little bit of friction. I also like them to be bright colors so that they are easy to see. The general rule for length is that while holding the handle, the poi should reach to either the top of your ankles or to your shoulder. That is the basic version.
www.youtube.com/watch
There are some other options like attaching loop handles onto them (I like my handles to be big enough so that they fit over my wrist). Then it is good to put some sort of weight on the handle to make tosses and contact poi easier. Strings sometimes work for the middle cord section but they are often to narrow for my preference. Rope is nice if you can find some that fits the preferred conditions. Swivels of some kind also help with many tricks.

As usual some of the things we will focus on are:
- Foundational moves and their variations
- Mechanics and aesthetics of poi spinning
- Short choreographies where we will practice using transitions and combinations of moves
- Ways of traveling across a space with our poi in motion
- Incorporating poi skills with movement and dance

Please tell me any other requests and suggestions you have.

I will probably not be doing much flyering so please have anyone who is interested contact me or tell them to just show up at class.

If these class times to not work for you we can also arrange private and small group lessons.

Red Nose District Needs Professional Truck Driver. Also need 24 ft Flatbed Trailer

The Red Nose District is a large Esplanade entertainment camp. Last year we were the largest theme camp. This year we are in the 5:00 block next to center camp, a prime location. Burning Man is counting on us to put on a series of major shows for tens of thousands.

We have three enormous structures that include Cirque Berzerk, Totem, and the Nome, plus much other equipment.

Unfortunately, we just lost our 53-ft tractor-trailer rig. We are scrambling for resources to get our stuff up there and back on small trailers and trucks.

We have an uncommitted F350 or two and we need drivers to haul two trailers up and back. We have to trust the driver as the tow vehicle and loads are quite valuable. So we are looking for someone with a lot of experience and maybe a real license. If you have your own truck F350 or bigger, even better.

We will pay all hard costs and expenses, and make you an RND member, feed you and pay your camp dues.

We think we have all the trailers now, except for a 24 ft flat bed needed to haul a huge piece of aerial artwork to be used during the big Mutaytor show at our camp this year. If you could get the Hypha up there on your flatbed trailer or low-stakebed truck, you'd have the appreciation of tens of thousand of burners.

We may also need to transport a second stage as well, but are still working on getting that stage.

Contact Dr. Nome by phone at 408-309-2663 or by email at Dr.Nome@Speakeasy.net

Thursday 08/14
-- the return of dub --
Dubstep, love it, leave it, but goddamit, you best not deny it's power. Who in their right mind don't like their private parts humming with bass by speakers took to their limits?

Dubworth and Antiserum make a fuckin ridiculously cool appearance to the little room that could. Anybody in the dubstep arena already are well-versed about these guys. If you're unaware, you gonna be schooled with bass wobble sickness.

Sugar also welcomes Fire Lieber to our attic. She kicks ass.

And of course Rastatronics is going to play tonight. Who better to set you all straight?

9 - 10:15 :: Fire Lieber (High-4) - dubstep/d-n-b
10:15 - 11:15 :: Rastatronics (Sugar/Subwize) - dubstep/d-n-b

Thursday 08/21
-- to the batcave!! --
Haha. Somewhere along the line, I associated tribal with batcave and thus, you got your cool heading for tonight.

Seriously though, tonight is gonna rock you.

We are super stoked to have Santa Cruz's own unique-beat master, Nanda (Mutimusic), who's gonna show you how things can always take the interesting road. Most already know his bass-rollin creations, those of you who don't are gonna git down with a vengeance. We also are finally getting a long-awaited visit from your good friend Jasonian from Organic North and Funky Techno Tribe. Jasonian will make the Vets Hall shake with an awesome, meticulous blend of funcky tech and booty-shakin breaks.

Rob Monroy starts our night and djseek rolls it forward.

9 - 10:15 :: Rob Monroy (Sugar/Raindance) - house/tech-house
10:15 - 11:15 :: djseek (Sugar/spaceshipgaia) - tribal house/breaks

Thursday 08/28
-- burn baby burn --
Yes, many will be out in the desert lettin the freak flags freak, but we gonna do just fine in our neat little freak-box on our own.

Tonight we welcome a special dope visit from Ivan Ruiz (Tweekin Records, SF). A good friend of Rob's, Ivan gonna throw you for that loop you keep coming back for. Tonight we also got a super uber-rare all breaks tagteam set by LB (Giza) and our own Rastatronics. Both are huge dubstep locals, but tonight they gonna kick things up a notch just for you.

Steve Eatough starts and Rob Monroy keeps the blood flowin, or bollin... we like both.

We've had an amazing response to this and it looks like this one is gonna go off. The details: I will be starting my set at 10pm and going all the way until 1am at the Fusion Lounge at 110 Pearl Alley in Downtown Santa Cruz in between Walnut and Lincoln. This event is free, that's right - no cover. It is twenty one and up, so don't forget your ID. Also the same night is a shindig over at the 418 project - maybe check out both? I know Nanda is going to play and he is one of my favorite new DJs. Consider it a pre-party for the party in Harvey West tomorrow, or M-Pyre down in Monterey, but whatever you do, get on down there and come boogie!!! Oh yeah, and I'm serious about the ceramic Portuguese roosters.

For those of you that can make this event, this is a great time to come together as a community and enjoy our surroundings and each other and have a lot of fun in the process - everyone is able to participate whether that is just showing up and bringing some food to share or installing your art project on the beach for everyone to enjoy

Please contact Jennie Kay if you are interested in participating at any level -- just send her an email letting her know what you would like to be a part of - fire safety, set up, recycling, tear down, greeting, etc.

as if the 10a-10p beach party with your favorite djs, art, fun and nonsense on del monte beach (next to wharf 2, NOT the location we had last december) wasnt enough...now we have...

THE AFTERPARTY!!!

we have just secured the ol factory cafe (www.olfactorycafe.com) in sand city from 11p-4a

they will be offering a wine/beer bar, coffee/tea bar and midnight breakfast

this is a beautiful space, and as it stands, we dont have any issues with fire spinning in front of the venue - there is a residential house across the street, so if they get fussy with sound, that might be our only problem - otherwise, this whole area is industrial

lets support our burner-friendly businesses by taking the party to the ol factory cafe!!!

this is about a mile and a half from the beach burn, so its a totally walkable distance if you are too drunk to drive!!!

So, just wanted to throw it out there that I'm looking for a place to live beginning Aug 1 and would absolutely love to come into a like minded household. I can pay upwards to $700 or so and location isn't too important although I do prefer downtown or westsiiiiide :)

Most of you already know me and I'm definitely really mellow and a great housemate. I do web design from home and outside of the parties, I'm pretty quiet with a couple hours of sweet beats thrown in now and then.

I do have 2 cats that are both also super mellow, non-aggressive to other animals, indoor/outdoor, of course house-trained, etc. My all white kitten loves to spoon and has an affinity to licking the tops of beer bottles. My tabby likes to hump covers.. fixed, of course, he just thinks it's fun.

I do come with home office and some sound equipment so extra storage is a plus but not required.

Hopefully one a youse guys got an opening.
The following positions available:
* Customer Service Representatives
* Kitchen Manager

See below for more info.

Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet has been the playa's leading provider of low-cost, high-quality soulmates since 1998. We offer quality name-brand soulmates at substantially lower prices than can be found through conventional wholesale sources.

The Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet is a highly interactive daytime camp on the playa. In order to make magic happen we need giving, participation-oriented Burners. Costco has clear expectations: we work together, we play together – and no one slacks.

One reason why we all work so hard is that we love each other and we don't want our loved ones working hard while we relax. Your fellow Costco campers will become like a second family to you on and off the playa. We communicate year-round through our e-mail list - some of us met through Costco and have been friends for almost a decade!

We also play together and try to make each other happy. Our kitchen staff members lovingly prepare tasty and filling meals, our bar delivers cool frothy blender drinks directly to our cups all day long, and we all participate in camp-wide events like the annual Drunken Catholic School Girl Bike Ride.

Although our camp is highly-structured, we feel that this actually offers a more comfortable and enjoyable Burning Man experience. Costco campers enjoy amenities that they help to create such as two tasty meals per day, two shade structures, many couches, a hammock, and a ton of sexy people.

Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet embodies the heart of the Burning Man experience – dedicated gift-giving as its own reward. If you believe that Burning Man's 10 principles http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html can make life more fulfilling and enjoyable, then CSTO is the camp for you.

If you are interested in applying for these highly sought-after positions, please send an email to our Human Resources managers: knife (at) toaster (dot) net or r.chodorowreich (at) gmail (dot) com.

This month it will NOT be in conjunction with Boats and Beats because it's right before the 4th of July and the fuzz is cracking down big time on open containers (and fireworks, but that's another story all together) and we don't want anyone to get a $1000 ticket (that's how much they are charging for open containers and fireworks July 2-6, FYI).

So... this month we are back at the Seabright Bar and Lounge starting between 5:30 and 6:00.

Where: Seabright Bar and Lounge
429 Seabright Ave.
Santa Cruz, CA 95062

Time 5:30/6:00 until ?

DJ line up will be announced by Sparkinzi in this thread sometime between now and the event.
Also, Sugar will be moving upstairs to the "Bill Motto" room. We were up in that room a few weeks back when Taj played. Not only is the Bill Motto room down-right beautiful, as those who came when we were there before already know, the energy level in that room is huge.

Djs for July:
One of the special items on July's plate is that each of the Sugar resident djs are playing special 1.5 hour closing sets. We figured we deserved to treat ourselves since we are all super-duper stars :))

We are also super stoked to welcome back Raindance's Alia. Alia has been an integral part of the Santa Cruz scene forever and is one of the best djs around.

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

Please join burners, press and public for the Black Rock Arts Foundation ribbon-cutting ceremony for Peter Hudson's Homouroboros installation! This will be the official kick-off for the Zero1 festival, and the beginning of an entire month of monkey business in downtown San Jose.

The dedication will take place at 6pm on Saturday, May 17th at the Children's Discovery Museum - Discovery Meadow (directions here: http://tinyurl.com/6bbop3). Once the ribbon is cut by Melissa Alexander, Executive Director of BRAF, and Peter Hudson, the artist and creator of Homouroboros, the drums will start to pound and the zeotrope will start to spin. Get ready for what Wired Magazine called the winner of the "WOW, did you see that?" survey at Burning Man 2007.

Reception follows the ceremony, and the end of civil twilight is at 8:39pm. Be sure to see this incredible zeotrope at its best ... in full dark ... to appreciate the effects under the strobe lights of what scientists call "the persistence of vision". And don't forget, this piece will be in Discovery Meadow from May 15th - June 15th. Come by during the day, too (we'll have special daytime viewers available). Bring friends, family, kids, neighbors and co-workers! It's free to the public and a perfect fulfillment of BRAF's mission to place experimental, highly interactive art in public settings.

A film on the art installation Uchronia airs tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Riverside Twin Theatre in Santa Cruz as part of the Santa Cruz Film Festival. Here's the description:

"Uchronia" (aka “Belgian Waffle”) Saturday, May 17 - 2:30 p.m., Riverside Twin Theater

In the Black Rock Desert in 2006, 90 artists from Belgium shipped 100 miles of wooden beams to the playa. A 15 story, 200’x100’ undulating Frank Gehry-esque space, described by Burning Man founder Larry Harvey as “the talk of the playa” appears. Dwarfing all other sculptures, the Burners nicknamed it the “Belgium Waffle.”

The biggest draw at night, revelers packed into the cavern and danced to electronica, bathed in neon-green light. “We didn’t use a model, we just started at the bottom and kept adding as we went up,” said Jan Kriekels, who said he funded the entire $250,000 project, including buying $250 tickets for the volunteers who spent three weeks building it. Uchronia, named after a Belgian art movement, centered on a world without the concept of time, Kriekels said.

“This piece is a symbol for a system that creates its own creators. We all did this together without being told how to do it — we are factory workers, bookmakers, editors, designers, artists, salespeople — and we can only do this if we refuse to be defined,” he said. This is their story.

I'll need to buy the part ahead of time, so RSVPs are very important. The parts add up, so I'll need $30 per sculpture (let me know if you want to do more than one). If you want to just come and watch, that's fine too, but you'll be bumbed when you don't get to take a cool fire tree home with you. I'd need the money at least a week or so before the event. I can't afford to front. Paypal, or a check, or whatever. Just PM me.

After the workshop, you will know what parts you need to make another, but for the first one, it's best for me to buy them, so that nobody is stuck with the wrong thing.
We want to get the word out about this now so that we can get as many artists, theme camps, DJs, workshops as possible by the weekend of June 20-22.

Oh, and June 20 is also my and Mean Kitty's birthdays! So we are going to include a Gemini party so if you are a Gemini -- or just love us! -- come join in that little bit of fun at Lupin that weekend, too, as we'll be including a birthday/Gemini/Solstice celebration as well.

Interested in helping or bringing your little bit of Playa action to the SCruz mountains June 20-22? Please let me, Jenny Kay or Real Girl know as soon as you can.

Thank you in advance -- we greatly appreciate all of your efforts!

We're looking for a soul or two to corrupt, that knows there music and how to set it up. We wnt to build a DJ booth and a Consiousness Gallery (photos of our 8 yrs) I've got the power, does anyone have equip. to amplify? Table, whatever goes into that type of thing. We're an established Camp inside of Terminal City around the 3' oclock keyhole, most of the camp folk are from NV, cowboys-girls, lots of transplants and average joes. I live in SC w/ my girlfriend. We have a handful of SCruzzians who're making the trip this year. So...? who's the crazy in this crew?
